Tindig Pilipinas and allied organizations have condemned the alleged moves by some senators allied with the Dutertes to protect Vice President Sara Duterte from impeachment proceedings and Senator Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa from accountability after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against him.
Press Conference Statements
During a press conference, Atty. Dino de Leon said the message behind the change in Senate leadership while a crucial constitutional process is ongoing is clear. According to De Leon, some individuals seem intent on blocking the truth and shielding certain personalities from accountability.
He also criticized the Senate for placing Dela Rosa under protective custody after he was linked to crimes against humanity related to the bloody war on drugs during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
The lawyer stressed that the Senate should not become a "safe haven" for fugitives and those accused of serious crimes. He also reminded that senators' immunity is limited and does not cover grave offenses such as crimes against humanity.
Calls for Accountability
Yvonne Jereza of Magdalo called on Dela Rosa to face his case before the ICC, while Rafaella David of Akbayan said the Senate should not obstruct the service of the warrant and the impeachment process against Vice President Sara.
De Leon further asserted that the issue of sovereignty should not be used against the ICC, as it is part of international law, which is also recognized under the Philippine Constitution.
Fr. Robert Reyes also condemned some senators who allegedly obstruct impeachment and accountability processes.
The groups said they will continue to monitor the Senate's actions and encourage the public to defend constitutional processes and the accountability of government officials.
