PNP Chief Orders Probe on 4 Cops in New Year Firing Incidents
4 Cops Under Probe for New Year Indiscriminate Firing

Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has mandated a comprehensive investigation into four police officers implicated in indiscriminate firing incidents during the recent New Year's Eve festivities.

Strict Warning Ignored, Consequences Promised

In a strongly-worded statement issued on January 4, 2026, Nartatez emphasized that any action endangering public safety is unacceptable. He vowed to hold the involved personnel fully accountable, stating that indiscriminate firing represents a severe breach of discipline, an abuse of authority, and a clear violation of the law.

"My instruction was clear and simple: Do not use any firearm to greet the New Year or in any celebration," Nartatez declared. He expressed his disappointment, noting that he had trusted all uniformed personnel to maintain professionalism and focus on their peace and order duties, which was why the PNP did not resort to taping the muzzles of service firearms as a preventive measure.

Addressing the four erring officers directly, the PNP acting chief was unequivocal: "Pasensyahan na lang tayo. Once the investigation is done and found you liable, I will make sure that you will be kicked out of the police service."

Identified Officers and Immediate Actions

Based on official PNP data, the officers under investigation are:

  • A Police Master Sergeant assigned in Surigao del Sur
  • A Police Senior Master Sergeant stationed in Iloilo
  • A Patrolman based in Parañaque City
  • A Patrolman from Cagayan de Oro City

Nartatez confirmed he has already directed the regional directors of Caraga, Western Visayas, and the National Capital Region to disarm and detain the three policemen who have been arrested. A follow-up operation is currently underway to locate and apprehend the rookie policeman from Cagayan de Oro City, who remains at large.

Broader Crackdown and Personal Oversight

The PNP is not limiting its probe to these four cases. "We are also conducting an investigation to identify those responsible for the other cases of indiscriminate firing. They need to be identified and put behind bars for compromising the safety of the people," Nartatez added.

The acting chief pledged to personally monitor the progress of all indiscriminate firing cases. The four policemen face not only dismissal from the service but also potential jail time as criminal cases are prepared and filed against them.

This firm stance underscores the PNP leadership's commitment to discipline and public safety, sending a clear message that misconduct within the ranks will be met with the severest penalties.
