Army Official Removed Pending Probe Into Social Media Post

The Philippine Army has relieved a senior officer from his command position following allegations that he publicly withdrew support for President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. The move, confirmed on Friday, January 9, 2026, underscores the military's strict adherence to the chain of command.

Immediate Relief and Investigation Launched

Army spokesperson Colonel Louie Dema-ala stated that Colonel Audie Mongao was immediately removed as commander of the Training Support Group. This action was directed by the Commanding General of the Philippine Army to allow for a thorough inquiry.

"By the direction of the Commanding General, PA, Col. Mongao was immediately relieved from his post and put into A/U status to give way to a thorough investigation by the Training Command," Dema-ala said in an official statement. The "A/U" status refers to an administrative or unattached assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.

Social Media Post Triggers Military Inquiry

The controversy stems from an online statement allegedly made by Colonel Mongao on social media, which indicated a withdrawal of support for the President. Major General Michael Logico, commander of the Training Command, revealed that attempts to contact Mongao following the post were unsuccessful.

"An investigation is underway to determine possible administrative and legal charges that may be imposed upon him in relation to his online statement," Logico said in a Facebook post. The probe will examine the content and context of the social media activity.

Army Reaffirms Loyalty to Constitution and Chain of Command

Amid the incident, Army officials were quick to reaffirm the institution's unwavering professionalism and loyalty. Major General Logico emphasized that the Philippine Army remains steadfast behind its mandate.

He stated that the institution is "professional and steadfast behind its mandate, loyal to the Constitution and the chain of command." This public reaffirmation is seen as a standard procedure to maintain public trust and clarify the military's position during internal investigations.

The relief of Colonel Mongao highlights the Philippine military's strict policies regarding public conduct and expressions of political allegiance by its personnel, especially those in command positions.
