Four Suspects Apprehended in Sulu with High-Powered Firearms Cache

In a significant security operation in Talipao, Sulu, joint military and police forces have successfully arrested four individuals and seized a substantial arsenal of high-powered firearms. The operation, conducted on Friday, February 27, in Bagsak village, was part of efforts to enforce the recently implemented Gun-Free and Peace-Centered Community ordinance.

Details of the Arrest and Seized Items

Lieutenant General Donald Gumiran, commander of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), identified the suspects through their aliases as Jarah, Sumaidi, Hamsarani, and Sahiron. During the operation, law enforcement personnel confiscated two M-14 rifles, an M16 rifle, and an M203 grenade launcher, along with assorted ammunition and communication devices.

According to the 1103rd Infantry Brigade, the suspects are allegedly linked to a shooting incident that occurred in September 2025 in Barangay Bilaan, Talipao. This connection underscores the ongoing threats posed by illegal firearms in the region.

Official Statements and Community Impact

In a statement released on Saturday, February 28, Lieutenant General Gumiran emphasized the success of the operation, stating, "This successful operation reflects our troops’ vigilance and commitment to protecting our communities from armed threats." He further highlighted plans to intensify security operations in coordination with the Philippine National Police and local stakeholders to address loose firearms and prevent lawless activities.

Brigadier General Emmanuel Cabasan, commander of the 1103rd Infantry Brigade, praised the enforcement of Talipao's Gun-Free and Peace-Centered Community ordinance, which took effect on February 17. He noted that active community participation, including monitoring suspicious behavior and prompt reporting, was crucial in facilitating the arrests.

Talipao Mayor Reham Tulawie previously described the ordinance as a transformative step for the town, emphasizing that it goes beyond firearm prohibition to build trust, strengthen cooperation, and secure a brighter future for residents.

Aftermath and Legal Proceedings

The arresting team has turned the suspects over to the Talipao Municipal Council police authorities for appropriate legal action. This operation marks a proactive effort by local and national forces to enhance security and uphold peace in Sulu, demonstrating the effectiveness of collaborative law enforcement initiatives in combating armed threats.
