The Philippine National Police (PNP) has heightened its vigilance and deployed personnel to strategic locations, including the United States Embassy in Manila, amid concerns of potential protests. This security alert follows the recent large-scale US military intervention in Venezuela.
Police on Standby for Potential Demonstrations
In a statement released on January 5, 2026, PNP acting chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. confirmed that police units are closely monitoring sensitive areas. The primary goal is to ensure any mass demonstrations remain orderly and peaceful, with public safety as the paramount concern.
"We are prepared for any protest action and similar activities," Nartatez stated. He emphasized that police, particularly in Metro Manila and other urban centers, are ready to respond to any eventuality. "Our units are closely monitoring the US Embassy and other critical locations. We have police personnel on standby to ensure these areas remain orderly and peaceful," he added in a mix of English and Filipino.
Trigger: US Military Operation in Venezuela
The move comes after the United States military launched a significant operation against Venezuela on January 3, 2026. The operation involved airstrikes and ground actions reportedly targeting narcotics trafficking and criminal networks linked to the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Reports indicate that Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured and transported to New York to face charges.
This development has sparked international reactions, including in the Philippines. Several local groups and lawmakers have urged the National Government to formally condemn the US government's actions.
Proactive Measures and Intelligence Gathering
Acting Chief Nartatez has directed all local police units, with special attention to the Metro Manila Police District (MPD) and the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), to maintain vigilance. They are instructed to coordinate closely with local government units and barangay officials to monitor the security situation.
"We have increased the presence of our police personnel in strategic locations to prevent any possible disturbances," Nartatez explained. "As of now, we have not monitored any protest actions, but we are anticipating that there may be groups that will stage activities."
Beyond physical deployments, PNP intelligence units have been tasked to scan social media platforms and public forums for any signs of planned protests or potential security threats. This two-pronged approach aims to provide early warning and allow for a calibrated response to maintain peace and order in the capital and across the nation.
