Retired Philippine Air Force General Romeo Poquiz has secured his temporary freedom after posting bail following his arrest on charges of inciting to sedition against the government.
Arrest at NAIA and Questioning of Motives
General Poquiz was apprehended on December 5, 2025, upon his arrival at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City. He was returning from a trip to Bangkok, Thailand. The arrest was carried out by authorities based on a warrant issued by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 77, dated the same day.
In response to his detention, Poquiz raised concerns about the ease with which an ordinary citizen can be arrested for merely expressing feelings against corruption. He contrasted this with what he perceives as the continued freedom of elected officials allegedly involved in graft.
Court Proceedings and Bail Conditions
The court allowed Poquiz to post bail for his provisional liberty. His lawyer, Ferdinand Topacio, disclosed that the bail was set at P48,000. The charge of inciting to sedition is linked to Poquiz's alleged actions during an anti-corruption rally in November of the previous year. Prosecutors claim he called on members of the armed forces to join protests against the government at that event.
Broader Investigation into High-Profile Figures
Separately, the Philippine National Police's Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) is conducting an investigation into other high-profile personalities. This probe is connected to allegations of involvement in a riot that occurred in Manila during the first Trillion Peso March on September 21, 2025. Acting PNP Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. confirmed these investigative efforts during a press briefing at Camp Crame.
The case against the retired general highlights ongoing tensions between state authorities and critics who use public platforms to challenge government actions, particularly on the issue of corruption.
