Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV has expressed dismay that no senator has been arrested in the upper chamber following the attempted arrest of Senator Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa. In an interview with media personnel at the Senate, Trillanes called those who claim no senator has ever been arrested in the chamber liars.
Trillanes Recalls His Own Arrest
Trillanes revisited the incident of his own arrest while the Senate was in session. He presented a video showing the serving of the arrest warrant and the reading of his Miranda rights within the Senate premises.
In 2018, Trillanes was placed under protective custody by the Senate under then-Senate President Vicente Sotto II. The arrest was related to a rebellion case after former President Rodrigo Duterte revoked his amnesty. Trillanes was detained in the Senate before posting bail.
The Supreme Court ruled in 2024 that the former President's withdrawal of amnesty was unconstitutional.
Leila De Lima's Arrest Recalled
Aside from Trillanes, former Senator and now ML Party-list Representative Leila De Lima was also arrested while inside the Senate for cases related to the illegal drug trade. The arrest warrant was served in coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Senate Sergeant at Arms. De Lima surrendered but maintained her innocence.
Recently, De Lima was acquitted of all drug-related cases against her.
