Philippines, US, and Australia Wrap Up 16th Maritime Cooperative Activity in West Philippine Sea

The Philippines, in collaboration with the United States and Australia, has successfully concluded the 16th Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MMCA) in the West Philippine Sea. This significant event took place from April 9 to April 12, 2026, marking a key milestone in regional defense cooperation.

Enhanced Military Assets and Participation

According to Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Public Affairs Office Chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad, this MMCA represents the second training exercise attended by both the US and Australia, showcasing a diverse array of military assets from the participating nations. The Philippine contingent included the BRP Rajah Sulayman from the Philippine Navy and the BRP Melchora Aquino from the Philippine Coast Guard. Additionally, the Philippine Air Force deployed an FA-50, a C-208B Super Tucano aircraft, and a Sokol search-and-rescue helicopter to support the operations.

On the other side, the United States contributed the USS Ashland (LSD-48), while the Australian Defense Force sent the HMAS Toowoomba (FFH156), which was supported by an MH-60R helicopter and a P-8A Poseidon aircraft. This robust display of naval and aerial capabilities underscores the commitment of all three countries to strengthening their maritime partnerships.

Comprehensive Maritime Drills and Exercises

The cooperative activity featured a wide range of maritime drills designed to enhance interoperability and readiness. Key exercises included replenishment-at-sea approaches, communications exercises, maritime domain awareness activities, tactical maneuvering, night operations, and flyby drills. These drills are crucial for improving coordination and response capabilities in complex maritime environments, ensuring that the forces can operate effectively together during potential crises.

Commitment to Regional Security and Stability

In the aftermath of the exercise, the AFP reaffirmed its dedication to continuing such training initiatives to foster stronger ties with allied nations. The primary objectives of these activities are to ensure maritime security, protect national interests, and contribute to maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. By engaging in regular multilateral exercises, the Philippines aims to bolster its defense posture and promote a rules-based order in contested waters.

This successful MMCA not only highlights the growing cooperation between the Philippines, US, and Australia but also sends a clear message about their shared commitment to safeguarding maritime freedoms and addressing security challenges in the West Philippine Sea and beyond.
