AFP Anticipates China's 'Deceptive Messaging' on Balikatan Exercises
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has stated that it fully expects the Chinese Communist Party to issue reactions and what it describes as deceptive statements regarding the imminent commencement of this year's Balikatan Exercises. In a recent interview, AFP Spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, emphasized that China's anticipated remarks are a calculated component of their deceptive messaging strategy. This approach, according to Trinidad, is designed to bolster support for China's own actions and its ongoing territorial claims in the West Philippine Sea.
Transparency and Modernization Goals
Rear Admiral Trinidad clarified that with every iteration of the Balikatan Exercises, the Philippine military aims to be transparent and clear about its objectives. He underscored that these joint drills are fundamentally part of the broader modernization efforts within the armed forces. The primary goal is to develop a multi-capable military that can effectively respond to a wide array of situations, enhancing overall defense readiness.
Exercises Not Aimed at Confrontation
Trinidad was explicit in stating that the Balikatan Exercises are not designed to counter or oppose any specific nation, including China. Instead, he explained, the drills are intended to strengthen the Philippines' credible deterrence capability. Furthermore, the AFP spokesperson reinforced that the Philippines, along with its allied nations participating in the exercises, will never engage in territorial encroachment on areas outside their sovereign jurisdiction. He asserted that the core purpose of these military activities is to protect the Philippines, its national interests, and its sovereignty against what he termed the deceptive ambitions of other nations.
