The Ministry of Justice of the Czech Republic has clarified that there are no extradition proceedings against former Ako Bicol party-list Representative Elizaldy “Zaldy” Co. During a meeting held on April 27 in Prague, Czech Republic, with a Philippine delegation led by Acting Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida, Czech officials stated that they have neither received nor filed any formal extradition case against any Filipino citizen.
Bilateral Treaty Discussions
Both sides agreed to explore the possibility of establishing a bilateral treaty aimed at strengthening police cooperation between the Philippines and the Czech Republic. This move is seen as a step forward in enhancing mutual legal assistance and law enforcement collaboration between the two nations.
Philippine Authorities Continue Search
On the Philippine side, authorities are continuing operations to locate Co in connection with graft and malversation cases related to alleged anomalies in flood control projects in the country. The Department of Justice earlier reported that Co is no longer in the custody of Czech authorities and is believed to have moved within the Schengen area. Reports have emerged that he may have traveled to France to request political asylum.
International Coordination
The Philippine Center on Transnational Crime (PCTC) stated that it is continuously coordinating with international counterparts and is studying the possibility of requesting an Interpol red notice to track down and arrest the fugitive Co. The PCTC emphasized its commitment to pursuing all legal avenues to ensure accountability.
