Defense Secretary Teodoro Criticizes China's 'Sinister' Motives in Balikatan Exercises
Teodoro Slams China's 'Sinister' Intent in Balikatan Drills

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has strongly criticized China following its condemnation of the Balikatan Exercises, asserting that Beijing's intentions have long been non-transparent and "sinister." The remarks come as the largest-ever Balikatan drills are being conducted, involving troops from the Philippines, the United States, and Japan, with live-fire exercises taking place in northern regions and the West Philippine Sea, an area central to ongoing tensions.

China's Warnings and Teodoro's Rebuttal

China had previously issued warnings, suggesting that the joint military exercises could potentially lead to conflict and described them as "playing with fire." In response, Teodoro emphasized that the drills are merely a component of "collective deterrence" strategies. He argued that if China opposes these activities, it might indicate that their own plans are being disrupted, hinting at what he called an expansionist agenda by Beijing.

Challenges in Defense Cooperation

Meanwhile, Secretary Teodoro acknowledged that the utilization of Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites remains limited due to land-related issues. This is despite the expansion of the agreement in 2023 under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., which aimed to bolster defense capabilities through increased access to strategic locations.

The Balikatan Exercises, a key annual military event, have intensified in scale this year, reflecting heightened regional security concerns. The inclusion of Japan in the drills marks a significant development, underscoring broader alliances in the Indo-Pacific region aimed at countering perceived threats.

Teodoro's comments highlight the ongoing diplomatic and military friction between the Philippines and China, particularly over maritime disputes in the West Philippine Sea. The defense secretary reiterated the Philippines' commitment to upholding sovereignty and international law, while calling for greater transparency from China in its regional activities.
