Senator Tulfo Pledges Budget Push for Pag-asa Island Upgrades and Stability
Senator Erwin Tulfo, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, visited Pag-asa Island in the Kalayaan Island Group, Palawan province, on Thursday, April 9, 2026. During his visit, he outlined key initiatives aimed at mainstreaming development to ensure long-term stability in this strategic western outpost of the Philippines.
Infrastructure and Facility Rehabilitation
In a chance interview on the island, Tulfo vowed to push for funding in the 2027 national budget under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) to upgrade facilities and improve living conditions. He emphasized the urgent need to rehabilitate damaged structures, including the municipal hall and other key buildings, noting that many houses are in disrepair.
"You can see that the houses need repairs. I will definitely propose to fix all these buildings," he stated. Planned infrastructure upgrades include constructing a barangay health center, improving housing, and developing basic community facilities to address immediate needs.
Transport and Livelihood Support
Tulfo highlighted the importance of establishing a port and enhancing transport access, with plans to coordinate with the Philippine Ports Authority and the Department of Transportation. Additionally, he proposed livelihood assistance for residents, such as setting up a small trading post and providing financial aid to families.
Through coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, each household may receive livelihood support amounting to approximately PHP20,000, combining sustainable livelihood assistance and cash aid.
Community and Security Enhancements
To boost morale, Tulfo proposed building a Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) facility for troops and civilians, featuring recreational amenities like a mini-theater and other community spaces. He also plans to improve access to essential services by arranging monthly transport services for residents traveling to mainland Palawan, along with regular medical missions and health worker deployments.
"Let’s not give it up… It’s ours," he reiterated, underscoring the need to uphold the country’s rights in the area. Tulfo added that continued development and support for local communities and security forces will reinforce the Philippines’ presence and ensure long-term stability on Pag-asa Island.
