Senator Dela Rosa Returns to Senate Citing Shame Over Public Criticism
Dela Rosa Returns to Senate, Cites Shame

Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa returned to the Senate on Tuesday after months of hiding, citing shame over public criticism that he was receiving a salary without showing up for work. Dela Rosa admitted that he felt compelled to face the public and fulfill his duties as a senator.

Why Dela Rosa Returned

According to Dela Rosa, several important matters in the Senate required his presence, including the change in Senate leadership and the potential impeachment trial. He also said he was affected by public comments that he was getting paid despite being absent. “It is not my habit to receive payment without rendering service,” he said in a statement.

Background of His Absence

Dela Rosa disappeared from public view six months ago after Ombudsman Crispin Jesus Remulla said the International Criminal Court (ICC) had issued an arrest warrant against him. The warrant is related to the bloody drug war campaign under former President Rodrigo Duterte, when Dela Rosa served as chief of the Philippine National Police. The ICC confirmed the warrant on November 6, 2025. Dela Rosa admitted that he went into hiding after learning about the warrant because he feared for his freedom.
