Ex-DPWH chief Bonoan moved to hospital amid heart concerns

Former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary Manuel Bonoan has been transferred to a private hospital in Metro Manila pending the resolution of his petition for hospital arrest, the Philippine National Police (PNP) confirmed on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

In a press conference, PNP Public Information Office chief Colonel Allen Rae Co said Bonoan was moved around 11 p.m. on June 3 upon the request of the national police agency.

“Later that day, laboratory results showed elevated heart enzymes, which raised concern for a possible heart condition. He was therefore closely monitored and referred to a heart specialist for further evaluation,” Co said.

Bonoan was initially brought to the PNP General Hospital following his arrest, but Co noted that facility lacked necessary equipment and specialized care for the required tests.

As ordered by the Sandiganbayan, Bonoan is being secured by Criminal Investigation and Detection personnel 24/7, Co added.

Bonoan is a co-accused of Senator Jinggoy Estrada in graft and plunder charges related to alleged budget insertions and allocations for anomalous flood control projects, with accusations of kickbacks worth millions of pesos.
