Grandson Arrested for Choking Grandfather in Cebu

A 26-year-old man was arrested by the Inayawan Police Station after he choked his 65-year-old grandfather around 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 4, 2026, along Tabura Street in Barangay Poblacion Pardo, Cebu City.

The suspect was identified as John Dharelle Sevilla, a resident of the same area, while the victim is his grandfather, Raul, 65.

According to the investigation by the Inayawan Police Station, the victim and his wife were arguing. However, the grandson, John, who overheard the quarrel, sided with his grandmother and approached his grandfather, then choked him.

Due to the prolonged choking, the victim almost lost consciousness, prompting his uncles and aunts to call the Inayawan Police Station to have him arrested.

The suspect admitted that he choked his grandfather because he could no longer bear watching the couple argue. He said he felt pity for his grandmother, who was being verbally abused by the victim.

The couple's argument started over a misplaced key. But when it was found, the husband threw it outside the house and ordered his wife to pick it up. At this point, John said he got angry and asked his grandfather why he did that. “I told him, how can you treat mother like that? Then he started shouting at me, so I choked him,” John Dharelle said.

John Dharelle admitted that this was the third time he had confronted his grandfather due to his strictness. However, he expressed regret and apologized to his grandfather, promising not to repeat his actions. He said he feels pity for his young child, who would have no one to care for if he is imprisoned by his grandfather.

The Inayawan police will file a case of Attempted Parricide against the suspect.
