Mary Jane Veloso, the overseas Filipino worker who was previously on death row in Indonesia, is scheduled to testify against her alleged recruiter on June 19, 2026. The hearing will take place inside the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City, where Veloso is currently detained.
Details of the Testimony
Veloso's testimony will be heard by the Mandaluyong City Regional Trial Court Branch 210. The court will conduct the proceedings within the CIW compound, as per a Supreme Court order. Veloso will testify against Maria Cristina Sergi and others in cases involving qualified trafficking in persons, estafa, and violations of the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act.
Background of the Case
Veloso was transferred from Indonesia to the CIW in 2024 after being convicted of drug trafficking. The case against her recruiter is being heard in Santo Domingo, Nueva Ecija Regional Trial Court. However, due to Veloso's detention in Mandaluyong, the Supreme Court decided to hold the hearing at the CIW for security and logistical reasons.
Court Preparations
The court has ordered the CIW to prepare a room for the hearing, which will be attended by personnel from the Mandaluyong Regional Trial Court and other involved parties. This arrangement ensures that Veloso can participate in the legal proceedings without being transferred to a different facility.
