The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has reported a significant crackdown on illegal pyrotechnics during the recent New Year celebrations, resulting in multiple arrests and the seizure of thousands of prohibited items.
Widespread Operations Lead to Major Confiscations
According to police data monitored up to January 2, 2026, authorities conducted a total of 16 targeted operations across the city. These efforts are part of the DCPO's intensified campaign to enforce Davao City's long-standing prohibition on firecrackers and improvised explosive devices.
The operations proved highly successful, leading to the confiscation of 6,114 illegal firecrackers and devices. Police estimated the total value of the seized items at P23,620. All individuals arrested during these operations are currently in police custody as authorities prepare to file appropriate cases against them.
Viral Arrest Highlights Early Morning Violation
One particular arrest garnered widespread public attention after footage circulated on social media in the early hours of New Year's Day. The incident involved a 50-year-old caretaker, identified by the alias "Ramil" or "Ramon".
Police reports reviewed by Toril Police Station commander, Major Sheryl Y. Bautista, indicate that the suspect was apprehended at around 1:00 a.m. on January 1, 2026. The arrest took place in Rovical Village, Barangay Daliao, Toril, Davao City.
Responding officers stated they personally witnessed the suspect lighting a "Tulips" fountain firework in a public area. This act allegedly caused alarm and disturbance among residents in the vicinity. Following his arrest, police also confiscated one "Kwitis" and three "Baby Rocket" fireworks from the suspect's possession.
Strict Enforcement of a Two-Decade Ordinance
The suspect is facing charges for violating City Ordinance No. 060-02, Series of 2002, commonly known as the Davao City Firecracker Ban. This ordinance has been in effect for over 20 years and is credited by local authorities with drastically reducing firecracker-related injuries during holiday seasons.
Police officials have reiterated their call for public compliance, emphasizing that the use of firecrackers remains strictly prohibited at all times, regardless of the occasion. They encourage residents to participate in alternative, safer forms of celebration such as noise-free festivities and organized community events.
The DCPO has warned that monitoring and enforcement operations will continue beyond the New Year period to ensure public safety and maintain order. Violators will be apprehended and dealt with according to the full extent of the law.
