Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya has launched an immediate investigation following serious complaints about the quality of food served during the annual Employees Day celebration. The event, held on December 19, 2025 at the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC), has been marred by allegations that spoiled items were distributed to thousands of city workers.
Mayor Demands Immediate Written Reports
In response to the growing number of complaints, Mayor Gasataya has issued a direct order to all department and office heads. They are required to submit detailed written reports based on feedback from their personnel regarding the incident. Gasataya described the reports as "deeply troubling" and emphasized the need for a swift and thorough probe.
He stated that the annual Employees Day is one of the most anticipated events for the city's workforce. In light of its importance, the City Government of Bacolod provided full support to the official organizers, the Bacolod City Government Employees Union (BCGEU).
Significant Budget and Widespread Concern
Mayor Gasataya revealed that a substantial budget of P3.2 million was disbursed for the celebration. This amount was facilitated through a cash advance handled by BCGEU president Erry Lagtapon and was intended to cover all expenses, including food for the 6,650 attendees.
"Regrettably, numerous employees, including department and office heads, have reported concerns on the alleged spoiled food," Gasataya confirmed. He stressed that the incident is both disappointing and unacceptable, underscoring that the health and safety of employees must never be compromised.
Next Steps and Organizer's Response
The city administration is taking concrete steps to address the failure. Aside from the written reports, a meeting with the officers of the BCGEU has been scheduled to discuss the matter urgently. Mayor Gasataya was unequivocal in his commitment, vowing, "We will get to the bottom of this. This shall never happen again. Our workers deserve better."
He highlighted that common sense and the highest standards of care should have been applied in the food's preparation and handling. Meanwhile, BCGEU president Erry Lagtapon has indicated that the union will release an official statement as soon as it is available.
