Cebu City ushered in the year 2026 with a spectacular yet remarkably safe celebration, marked by vibrant fireworks displays and an unprecedented record of zero firecracker-related injuries across the Central Visayas region.
Zero Casualties and a Peaceful Transition
The Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 confirmed a peaceful and orderly transition into the New Year. From December 31, 2025, to January 1, 2026, not a single firecracker injury was recorded in any police station under its jurisdiction. Authorities also reported no incidents of indiscriminate firing or victims of stray bullets, a significant achievement for public safety.
Police Brigadier General Redrico Maranan, the regional director of PRO-7, expressed his sincere appreciation for the successful observance. He attributed the peaceful atmosphere to the strong cooperation between communities, local government units, partner agencies, and vigilant police personnel.
Police Vigilance and Community Cooperation
The successful outcome was a direct result of stringent security measures and continuous public advisories. Police forces across Central Visayas maintained a high state of alert, implementing enhanced patrols and visibility as directed nationwide by Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.
General Maranan emphasized that the "One-Strike Policy" of the Chief of the Philippine National Police was strictly enforced. This strong police presence served as a clear deterrent against any actions that could endanger lives. Simultaneously, local government units tirelessly campaigned against the use of illegal firecrackers sold on streets, warning the public of the life-threatening risks they pose.
A Foundation for a Prosperous Year
While PRO-7 had received reports of minor firework-related incidents in the weeks leading up to the celebration, these did not disrupt the overall peace and order of the region during the main event. General Maranan highlighted that the peaceful beginning reflects a shared community commitment to responsible celebration and safety.
"I extend my sincere appreciation to our communities, partner agencies, local government units, and our police personnel for their cooperation and vigilance," Maranan stated. "Despite minor firework related incidents, the welcoming of Year 2026 remained generally peaceful and orderly. This reflects our shared commitment to public safety and responsible celebration. May this peaceful beginning lead us toward a prosperous year ahead."
The orderly and safe celebration in Cebu City sets a positive tone for 2026, demonstrating how effective law enforcement and responsible community behavior can ensure that festivities are both joyful and secure for all citizens.
