A former convict was fatally shot during a confrontation with police officers from Mabolo Police Station in Cebu City on Monday afternoon, November 17, 2025.
Police Response to Armed Suspect
At approximately 12:55 PM, the Mabolo Police Station 4 under the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) received a telephone call from a concerned citizen reporting an armed individual in Sitio Back Sugbutel, Barangay Carreta. Personnel from the Station Drug Enforcement Unit immediately launched a verification operation.
Riding their motorcycles, the police officers quickly proceeded to the location identified by the caller. Upon entering the interior portion of the area, they spotted the suspect matching the description provided and attempted to approach him.
Confrontation and Shootout
The suspect, identified as Angelito Mendoza, 51, from Sitio Kalinaw in the same barangay, noticed the officers and immediately fled while carrying his weapon. He attempted to escape through narrow pathways between houses.
When cornered with no escape route, Mendoza drew his firearm, but was preempted by an officer who shot him in the leg. Despite being wounded in the foot, the suspect continued to resist and was subsequently shot in both hands.
Police successfully disarmed Mendoza of his .45 caliber pistol containing seven live bullets, one of which had failed to discharge.
Aftermath and Investigation
Officers immediately called for medical assistance from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) to transport the wounded suspect to Cebu City Medical Center. However, Dr. Jelord Pateres declared Mendoza dead upon arrival.
Scene of the Crime Operation (SOCO) 7 personnel recovered the firearm during their investigation. Records indicate that Mendoza had multiple previous cases and had been imprisoned when he was 37 years old.
The entire incident concluded by 1:15 PM, leaving authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter with the ex-convict.
