Market Crackdown on Tampered Weighing Scales

Inspectors at the Lapu-Lapu City Public Market in Barangay Poblacion have launched a vigorous campaign against dishonest vendors, confiscating four tampered weighing scales in recent inspections. The crackdown comes as authorities respond to growing concerns about customers being shortchanged during their purchases.

Detailed Inspection Results

Market Administrator Ma. Elena Caballes reported that the operation resulted in three defective scales being seized during an inspection on Monday, November 24, with an additional scale confiscated during a follow-up check on Wednesday, November 26. The inspection revealed that three vendors from the fish section and one from the meat section were using manipulated devices that provided inaccurate measurements.

Caballes explained that the intensified market inspection program was triggered by a viral video showing a shopper complaining about being shortchanged. This incident prompted immediate action from market authorities determined to protect consumers from fraudulent practices.

Legal Consequences and Ongoing Vigilance

All confiscated weighing scales have been permanently removed from service, according to official statements. Under the city ordinance, first-time offenders caught manipulating weighing scales face serious penalties including a P500 fine and potential imprisonment for intentional or fraudulent alterations.

With the Christmas shopping season approaching, Caballes warned shoppers to remain vigilant for tampered devices or heavier plates that could affect measurement accuracy. She announced that daily random inspections may be implemented not only at the main Poblacion market but also at its satellite markets to ensure fair trading practices during the busy holiday period.

The market administration emphasizes its commitment to maintaining integrity in commercial transactions and protecting consumers from unfair practices, especially during peak shopping seasons when market activity increases significantly.
