Cebu City, Province Cancel Classes Jan 19 for Sinulog 2026 Participants
No Classes in Cebu Jan 19 for Sinulog Festival 2026

In a move to accommodate the massive participation in the grand Sinulog Festival, local officials in Cebu have ordered a day-long suspension of classes across the island.

Official Announcements from City and Province

Mayor Nestor Archival of Cebu City declared no classes for all levels, in both private and public schools, on Monday, January 19, 2026. The suspension is effective for the entire city. Meanwhile, Governor Pamela Baricuatro issued a parallel directive for all public schools under the provincial government's jurisdiction.

The primary reason cited by both leaders is the huge number of students who actively participated in or attended the various events of the Sinulog Festival 2026. The suspension aims to provide these students, as well as residents who joined the festivities, adequate time to rest, recover, and travel safely back to their respective homes.

Purpose and Resumption of Academic Activities

The class holiday is specifically intended to grant students a proper recovery period. Officials emphasized the importance of safety and ensuring that young participants are not fatigued for the journey home after the vibrant and physically demanding festival celebrations.

Regular academic schedules will resume on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. All schools are expected to operate normally on this date following the one-day break.

Additional Benefits for Capitol Employees

Beyond the school suspension, the Cebu Provincial Government has also announced a benefit for its workforce. Employees of the Capitol who worked during the Sinulog Festival will be granted a compensatory day off. This measure acknowledges the extra effort put in by staff during the major provincial event.

The coordinated announcements from the city and provincial governments highlight a community-focused approach to managing one of the Philippines' most famous and crowded festivals, prioritizing the well-being of students and residents alike.
