A 69-year-old farmer was found lifeless in a canal in Cebu province, in what authorities suspect was a tragic accident stemming from severe intoxication.
Victim Discovered by Teenager
The incident occurred in Barangay Cambangkaya, Catmon town, Cebu province. The victim was identified as Melchor Loloy Colipano, also known as Meljor, a married resident of the area.
His body was discovered at around 11:20 AM on Sunday, December 21, 2025. A 15-year-old boy passing by the location found the man with his knee stuck in the canal.
History of Drinking Precedes Tragedy
According to the investigation led by the Catmon Police, the barangay captain revealed that Meljor was known in the community as a habitual drinker.
Details from the scene indicate that on the afternoon before the incident, Saturday at around 5 PM, the victim's wife had tried to persuade him to come home. He reportedly refused and continued drinking with friends.
Police theorize that while walking home, the severely intoxicated man fell into the canal, leading to his death.
Police Recommend Autopsy
To eliminate any suspicions of foul play, the Catmon police have suggested that the family subject the body to an autopsy. This procedure is standard in such cases to determine the exact cause of death and provide closure to the grieving family.
The local community is shaken by the event, which highlights the dangers associated with excessive alcohol consumption, particularly for elderly individuals.
