Cebu City Opens Temporary Dumpsite in Consolacion After Landfill Collapse
Temporary Dumpsite Opens After Binaliw Landfill Collapse

To prevent a garbage collection crisis, Cebu City authorities have swiftly established a temporary disposal site following a landslide at the main landfill. This move ensures waste services continue across the city without delay.

Emergency Response to Landfill Collapse

Following the ground collapse at the Binaliw landfill, Liga ng Barangay President Franklyn Ong announced that a temporary dumpsite is now operational at Asian Energy in Consolacion. The Department of Public Services (DPS) confirmed that operations at this emergency facility began on Saturday afternoon.

The site will remain open as an interim solution while the city government searches for a more permanent answer to its waste disposal challenges. This quick action was deemed critical to avoid a halt in garbage collection that would affect all city residents.

Long-Term Plan and Funding

Even before this incident, Mayor Michael Rama had already prepared a comprehensive Solid Waste Management Program valued at 2.1 million pesos. The funding for this initiative is earmarked to come from the 8.5 million peso Local Development Fund allocated to each barangay.

This major program will be a key topic at the upcoming Development Council Meeting scheduled for January 21. The meeting aims to strengthen waste management protocols for the entire city. A significant push for strict waste segregation at the barangay level is set to begin in February.

Ongoing Barangay Concerns and Collaboration

In December 2025, the Liga ng Barangay had already forwarded several complaints to the Solid Waste Management Board. These issues highlighted operational challenges, including:

  • A shortage of garbage trucks.
  • The high cost of fuel and operations for the long haul to Binaliw.
  • The need for more city government support to implement effective segregation at the barangay level.

According to Ong, the barangay league continues to work closely with the DPS and the Mayor's Office to find practical and immediate solutions to the city's persistent waste management problems. The opening of the temporary dumpsite is the first result of this collaborative effort.
