Cebu City Government Distributes Financial Assistance to Displaced Families in Calamba

The Cebu City Government has extended crucial financial support to families who were rendered homeless following a court-mandated demolition on a private property located in Barangay Calamba. This initiative underscores the local administration's commitment to addressing the immediate needs of affected residents during a challenging transition period.

Distribution Event at Cebu City Hall

During a distribution event held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the Cebu City Hall, a total of 81 families received cash assistance. Each family was granted P30,060 to help cover their urgent necessities in the aftermath of the demolition. The program was spearheaded by the Division for the Welfare of the Urban Poor (DWUP), with Mayor Nestor Archival at the helm, alongside DWUP Officer-in-Charge Marie Joan Loreto.

Legal Basis and Rationale for Assistance

In an explanation provided by Loreto, the city opted for financial aid because no suitable relocation site is currently available for the displaced residents. She clarified that this action is in strict compliance with the Urban Development and Housing Act (UDHA), also known as Republic Act 7279. This legislation mandates local government units to provide financial assistance when immediate relocation is not feasible.

"We do not have an available relocation site, so the office facilitated financial assistance as outlined in UDHA RA 7279, which states that in the absence of relocation, the LGU shall provide financial assistance equivalent to 60 days times the minimum wage," Loreto emphasized. This provision ensures that affected families receive temporary support while longer-term housing solutions are being developed.

Ongoing Efforts for Long-Term Solutions

The financial aid is intended as a temporary measure to alleviate the immediate hardships faced by the families. Concurrently, the DWUP is actively searching for potential relocation sites to offer a more permanent resolution to their housing needs. This dual approach highlights the city's strategy of providing immediate relief while working towards sustainable outcomes.

Community and Official Participation

The distribution event saw the presence of key local figures, including Councilor Paul Labra and officials from Barangay Calamba, led by Barangay Captain Ester Concha. Their involvement underscores the collaborative effort between city and barangay levels to support the affected community during this difficult time.

This response by the Cebu City Government not only addresses the pressing needs of displaced families but also reinforces the importance of adhering to national housing laws to protect urban poor communities. As the search for relocation sites continues, the provided financial assistance serves as a vital lifeline, ensuring that these families can navigate their current challenges with greater stability and hope for the future.
