Senator Dela Rosa considers salary waiver amid Senate absence

MANILA. Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa is reportedly considering waiving his salaries and allowances amid his continued absence from the Senate, Senate Deputy Majority Leader JV Ejercito confirmed on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

In an interview with reporters, Ejercito said: “I think there is already a move. They’re just waiting for the final decision. They’re already considering declining salaries and allowances. So, that’s good news.”

Ejercito added: “We don’t know how to get in touch with him. However, there are ongoing discussions with his camp. Hopefully, there will be a positive development by next week.”

Last week, Ejercito appealed to Dela Rosa to waive his salaries and benefits while he remains absent from legislative duties. An ethics complaint was filed against Dela Rosa by anti-corruption group “Wag Kang KuCorrupt,” accusing him of dereliction of duty for failing to attend sessions and perform his official functions as a lawmaker.

The group seeks a formal inquiry to determine whether Dela Rosa’s conduct violates Senate rules and ethical standards, recommending appropriate sanctions. The complaint raises concerns over potential misuse of public funds if Dela Rosa continues receiving compensation without fulfilling his duties, as well as erosion of public trust in democratic institutions.

Dela Rosa has not attended any Senate sessions since November 2025, following Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla’s statement that the International Criminal Court (ICC) had issued a warrant for his arrest. The warrant is related to his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during former President Rodrigo Duterte’s drug war.
