Fugitive Businessman Charlie 'Atong' Ang Narrowly Evades Authorities in Calabarzon Region
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla disclosed on Thursday that fugitive businessman Charlie "Atong" Ang was recently spotted in the Calabarzon region, where pursuing authorities narrowly missed capturing him by just one day. The revelation came during a television interview where Remulla provided new details about the ongoing manhunt for the wanted individual.
Close Encounter in Region 4A
"He was spotted in Region 4A a little less than two weeks ago. We had follow-up operations, we missed him by a day," Remulla stated during the broadcast interview. While the Interior Secretary had previously mentioned that Ang narrowly avoided arrest approximately two weeks earlier, he had declined to specify the exact location at that time.
The Calabarzon region, officially designated as Region 4A, encompasses five provinces: Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon. This area has now become a focal point in the search for the elusive businessman.
Mobile Lifestyle with Small Group
According to Remulla's intelligence, Ang appears to be traveling with a minimal security detail and frequently changes locations to avoid detection. "Apparently he travels in a small group, it seems like there are only three of them moving from one house to another," the Interior Secretary explained, describing the fugitive's apparent strategy of constantly shifting between safe houses within the region.
Serious Charges and Substantial Reward
Multiple courts in Laguna and Batangas have issued non-bailable warrants for Ang's arrest on charges of kidnapping and serious illegal detention. These charges stem from the disappearance of thirty-four cockfight enthusiasts, a case that has drawn significant public attention. Authorities have already taken twenty of Ang's co-accused into police custody, increasing pressure on the remaining fugitive.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government has escalated efforts to capture Ang by offering a substantial PHP20-million reward for information leading to his arrest. This significant bounty reflects the seriousness of the charges and the government's determination to bring the businessman to justice.
Ongoing Manhunt Intensifies
With this latest sighting confirmed by the Interior Secretary, law enforcement agencies have intensified their search operations throughout the Calabarzon region. The narrow miss has provided authorities with valuable intelligence about Ang's movements and patterns, though his ability to evade capture continues to frustrate pursuing teams.
The case remains a high priority for Philippine law enforcement, with Remulla's public disclosure serving both to update the public and potentially generate new leads through the substantial reward offering. As the manhunt continues, authorities remain hopeful that the combination of increased vigilance and financial incentive will eventually lead to Ang's apprehension.
