Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival has called for the minority bloc in the Cebu City Council to be given committee chairmanships following the council's reorganization. He urged both political camps to cooperate for the city's development programs.
Mayor's Appeal for Unity
In an interview with reporters after his first State of the City Address (SOCA), Archival said he respects the majority bloc's decision on committee assignments but hopes political differences will not hinder the council's work. He stressed that the majority should find ways to collaborate effectively with the minority to ensure unity in implementing programs beneficial to Cebu City residents.
Council Reorganization for Fiscal Year 2026-2027
The mayor made his statement after the City Council approved its reorganization for Fiscal Year 2026-2027, where most key committee chairmanships remain held by majority bloc members. Under the new assignments, Councilor Nyza Archival of the minority bloc was given chairmanship of the Committees on Tourism, Arts and Culture, and Sister Cities Relations and Big Brother Program. Councilor Paul Labra chairs the Committee on Public Order.
Minority Leadership Without Chairmanships
Minority Floor Leader Sisinio Andales, along with Assistant Minority Floor Leaders Alvin Arcilla and Jose Abellanosa, were not given any committee chairmanship. Archival clarified that the selection of committees is entirely within the council's authority.
Despite the political shift within the council, the mayor remains positive that both sides can work together for programs that benefit Cebu City residents.
