In a significant crackdown on illicit trade, law enforcement operatives in Zamboanga City have successfully intercepted a large shipment of smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately P2.4 million. The operation, which took place in the early hours of Wednesday, April 15, 2026, marks a substantial victory for local authorities combating smuggling activities in the region.
Details of the Seizure
According to Police Colonel Fidel Fortaleza Jr., director of the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO), the confiscation occurred around 3:30 a.m. on April 15 in the Isla Berde Chonga Drive area of Talon-Talon village. The smuggled cigarettes were discovered abandoned along the shoreline after the individuals transporting them fled upon detecting the presence of police and other operatives.
Value and Origin of the Contraband
The authorities seized a total of 41 master cases of smuggled cigarettes, with an estimated worth of P2,460,000. Preliminary investigations reveal that the cigarettes bear a brand name manufactured in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, indicating a potential cross-border smuggling operation.
Investigation and Coordination Efforts
Police Colonel Fortaleza emphasized that the ZCPO has coordinated with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and Regional Maritime Unit-9 to assist in the ongoing investigation. The primary objective is to identify the owner of the confiscated smuggled cigarettes and uncover the broader network involved in this illicit trade.
The confiscated items have been transported to Zamboanga City Police Station 12 for proper disposition and further legal proceedings. This operation underscores the continued efforts of law enforcement agencies to curb smuggling and protect local economies from the impacts of contraband goods.
