PNP Urges Barangay Leaders for Safe New Year, Reports 91 Firecracker Victims
PNP Calls for Safe New Year, 91 Firecracker Victims So Far

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has issued a strong appeal to barangay leaders across the nation to help ensure a safe and incident-free New Year's celebration. The call was made by acting PNP chief, Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

Barangay Officials on the Frontlines of Safety

In his statement, Nartatez emphasized the critical role of local leaders in community safety. "Barangay leaders are at the forefront of ensuring that local festivities remain incident-free," he stated. The PNP urges them to take proactive measures to protect their constituents, with a specific focus on preventing the use of illegal firecrackers and the dangerous practice of indiscriminate firing of guns to welcome the New Year.

Nartatez reiterated the long-standing appeal for the public to avoid using firecrackers altogether. This plea is backed by concerning data from the Department of Health (DOH).

Alarming Injury Statistics Despite Decline

According to the latest DOH figures, 91 firecracker-related injuries have been recorded from December 21 to December 27. This data, gathered from 62 sentinel hospitals across the country, includes two minors who suffered finger amputations.

While the number is still significant, it represents a 34 percent decrease compared to the 137 cases reported during the same period in the previous year. Despite this positive trend, authorities stress that even one injury is one too many.

Public Vigilance Against Indiscriminate Firing

The PNP chief also encouraged the public to report any incidents of indiscriminate firing in their communities. This call comes after a tragic incident in Tondo, Manila, where a man died after being hit by a stray bullet on Christmas Day.

Nartatez highlighted the essential partnership between the police and citizens. "While your PNP is implementing safety measures to cover as many communities, the vigilance, cooperation and involvement of our kababayan in peace and order are really essential in keeping everyone safe," he explained.

He also issued a stern reminder to police personnel and firearm owners regarding the strict enforcement of the one-strike policy against indiscriminate firing. This policy mandates severe penalties for anyone caught discharging a firearm recklessly during the holiday season.
