Police in Eastern Visayas have launched a full-scale investigation following the reported disappearance of a Catholic priest from Leyte province. The region's top police official confirmed the probe is a top priority.
Police Chief Orders Urgent Investigation
Brigadier General Jason Capoy, the regional director of the Eastern Visayas police, has formally ordered an investigation into the case of Father Edwin Caintoy. The 55-year-old priest was reported missing on December 23, 2025.
In a media statement issued on Friday, December 27, General Capoy emphasized the seriousness with which authorities are treating the incident. He stated that the police force is dedicating all necessary resources to verify the circumstances of the disappearance and to locate the missing clergyman promptly.
"The police in the region is treating the matter with the utmost importance," Capoy said. The focus is on actively pursuing every available lead to find Father Caintoy as soon as possible.
Appeal for Public Cooperation and Caution
Authorities have made a direct appeal to the public for assistance. The Police Regional Office 8 is encouraging anyone who might have relevant information about the priest's whereabouts to come forward immediately.
Capoy specifically asked individuals to coordinate with the Babatngon Municipal Police Station or the nearest police station to ensure prompt action. This call highlights the investigative team's reliance on community support to generate new leads.
Simultaneously, the police chief issued a strong warning about misinformation. He addressed rumors circulating on social media platforms that claim Father Caintoy has already been found.
"Any information circulating on social media claiming that Father Caintoy has been found remains unverified," Capoy clarified. He advised both the public and media outlets to rely solely on official police sources for confirmed updates to avoid spreading false news.
Interim Parish Administrator Appointed
As the search continues, the Archdiocese of Palo has taken steps to ensure the continuity of pastoral care in Father Caintoy's parish. Father Edwin Caintoy had been assigned as the parish priest of the San Jose de Malibago Parish in Barangay Malibago, Babatngon, Leyte.
In response to his absence, the Archbishop of Palo has appointed Father Arnold Aurelio to serve as the interim parish administrator. This appointment became effective on December 26, 2025, ensuring the spiritual and administrative needs of the parish community are met during this uncertain time.
