A religious group's bold claim of global ownership led to the temporary closure of a major highway in Davao Oriental on Christmas Day, causing traffic chaos before police successfully negotiated a peaceful resolution.
Highway Standoff on Christmas Morning
The unusual incident unfolded on December 25, 2025, around 8:30 a.m. in Purok Basio, Barangay San Ignacio, Manay. Members of a group, led by a man calling himself Datu Watawat, also known as Senior Ruben Hari, barricaded a section of the national highway directly in front of their chapel.
In a move that quickly spread across social media, the group declared themselves the "Owner of the World" and asserted control over the area. They demanded payment from motorists and even government entities, claiming the Philippine government owed them a staggering P72 million in rent for using the land.
Viral Videos Show Religious Paraphernalia and 'WAR' Signs
Footage shared online, including a Facebook Live video by resident Alvin Lopez, captured the scene. Group members placed crosses and other religious items on the asphalt, while some carried wooden swords. Disturbing signs bearing the words "WAR" and "GUIDON" were also visible at the site.
Lopez noted this was the first instance the group had escalated their annual December 25 religious observance from a parade to a full highway occupation. The blockage caused a significant traffic standstill on the busy road, stranding motorists and raising safety concerns.
Police and Military Launch Coordinated Response
The Manay Municipal Police Station, under Acting Chief of Police PMa. Ross C. Cabigas, responded immediately. To manage the situation and ensure public safety, they coordinated with the Davao Oriental Police Mobile Force Company (DOPMFC) and the 66th Infantry Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
After assessing that the group was conducting an unsanctioned deviation from their traditional religious parade, authorities engaged them in calm and respectful dialogue. Police requested the removal of all obstructions from the roadway.
Peaceful Resolution and Clear Warning
The group complied with the police request without resistance, allowing traffic flow to resume normally. No injuries or arrests were reported. All religious items were returned to the group's chapel after the road was cleared.
While authorities emphasized respect for freedom of religious expression, they issued a clear warning. Actions that disrupt public order and endanger safety will not be tolerated. As of the latest reports, police are still determining whether to file charges related to the illegal road blockage.
