In a startling incident at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) facility in Barangay Nalook, Kalibo, Aklan, a 17-year-old boy was caught attempting to smuggle shabu, cleverly hidden within the stems of kangkong (water spinach). The teenager, identified only by the alias Dadong, is now under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), as confirmed by Police Lieutenant Julie Ruiz, the Police Community Relations Officer of the Kalibo Municipal Police Station.
Details of the Smuggling Attempt
According to police reports, the incident unfolded during a routine visit to the jail. Dadong, a resident of Barangay Bugasongan in Lezo, Aklan, allegedly tried to deliver vegetables and pork meat to an acquaintance who is an inmate at the facility. However, during a standard inspection, jail guards discovered something suspicious: four sachets of suspected shabu and several rolled-up pieces of aluminum foil concealed inside the hollow stems of the kangkong.
Recovery of Evidence and Legal Proceedings
The authorities swiftly recovered the illicit items, which included the drug sachets and the aluminum foil, commonly used in drug consumption. The teenager has claimed that he was merely following orders to deliver the food items and was unaware of the hidden contraband. Despite his defense, the police are preparing to file a case against him, with the DSWD providing support and oversight due to his minor status.
This case highlights ongoing challenges in preventing drug smuggling into correctional facilities, even through seemingly innocent means like food deliveries. The collaboration between the BJMP, local police, and DSWD underscores a coordinated effort to address such security breaches and ensure the safety of inmates and staff.
