The Department of Education (DepEd) has tightened security in schools nationwide, strengthened anti-bullying efforts, and improved student protection mechanisms following a shooting at a public school in Tacloban City on June 22, 2026.
School Safety Campaign launched
In a news release on Friday, June 26, 2026, Education Secretary Sonny Angara announced the launch of the School Safety Campaign, a comprehensive effort to ensure schools remain safe while fostering a conducive learning environment through stronger prevention, reporting, response, and accountability mechanisms.
"We are moving with urgency because protecting our children is our absolute priority, and as President Bongbong Marcos always emphasizes, our schools must strictly remain safe zones for learning," Angara said.
Collaboration with stakeholders
To ensure the successful implementation of the program, DepEd is collaborating with schools, parents, local government units (LGUs), law enforcement agencies, and community stakeholders to strengthen coordination across sectors and effectively address security concerns.
Security measures implemented
Under this initiative, DepEd is implementing various security measures in public schools nationwide, including the deployment of handheld metal detectors, stricter visitor management systems, regular bag inspections, expanded closed-circuit television (CCTV) coverage, and the strategic positioning of security personnel.
The department is now conducting safety audits to assess school infrastructure.
