Dear Papa Joe,
Good day to you. I am Jenalyn, 23 years old, living in Carcar City. I grew up in a poor family, but despite the hardship, I strived to study because I have ambitions in life. I really wanted to finish school, especially college. I worked during the day and studied at night until the pandemic came, and I only reached first year college. Life became harder due to the crisis, and I couldn't continue studying because the place I worked at closed. I applied for other jobs and was accepted as a waitress in a restaurant. My salary is 9k monthly plus some benefits. I am already very happy and grateful to God, but why do opportunities come all at once? Someone offered me a job as a domestic helper in Hong Kong, taking care of an elderly person. My family really wants me to grab the opportunity, but I am hesitant because I might fail. What if I can't handle life there and come back here jobless? I am very confused. Please advise me.
Jenalyn
Dear Jenalyn,
Thank you very much for trusting our column here at Superbalita. My advice to you is to first clarify with the person who recommended you how sure and safe your job in Hong Kong is. Is it legal? Who will pay for the processing of papers? Who will pay for your fare? There are many things you need to be sure of so that if you are there and you don't like it, you can go home without it hurting your pocket too much since it's not your expense. Anyway, there are many other jobs you can find in Cebu as long as you work hard. In these times when many are struggling, even the rich are having problems with their businesses, we need to hold on to a knife's edge, use strategy. There's nothing wrong with being a DH in Hong Kong because I know many people there who have okay employers, but again, clarify everything and above all, pray to God, ask for His guidance that your decision may be the right one.
Papa Joe
