The newly inaugurated 1st Calderon Cup Under-21 basketball tournament kicked off with thrilling action at the Badian Sports Complex in Cebu, where host team Badian celebrated a hard-fought 92–77 victory over Ginatilan. The triumphant squad enjoyed a celebratory photo opportunity with Mayor Jerome Librando, marking a memorable start to the competition.

Badian's Commanding Performance

James Ivan Alvizo emerged as the standout player for Badian, erupting for 26 points while contributing nine rebounds, three assists, and six steals. His all-around effort was complemented by strong support from teammates Clifford Belarmino, who added 14 points, and Clark Aron Bulahan, who recorded a double-double with 13 markers and 10 rebounds.

Game Dynamics and Key Moments

Ginatilan started strong, seizing an early 24–17 lead in the first quarter. However, Badian responded with a 12-4 rally, capped by Lei Beltram Abranilla's layup, to edge ahead 29–28 in the second quarter. The lead changed hands 11 times throughout the contest, but Badian managed to maintain a narrow 62–57 advantage heading into the final period.

Ginatilan showed resilience, trimming the deficit to 66–64 on a reverse layup by John Luis Mansueto. Yet, a decisive 6–0 run orchestrated by Belarmino and Bulahan restored Badian's control, ultimately securing the win. For Ginatilan, Jigger Biligantol led the scoring with 16 points, supported by John Rusell Gosanes and James Miguel Tuason with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Moalboal's Dominant Debut

In the tournament's opening game, Moalboal made a powerful statement by demolishing Alcantara 79–57. Considered a title favorite in the league organized by Cebu 7th District Representative Patricia “Patsy” Calderon, Moalboal quickly asserted dominance, stretching their lead to as much as 27 points at 49–22 and never looking back.

Three Moalboal players scored in double figures, led by Leo Talledo with 15 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and two assists. Jhon Ryan Abines contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, while Jeremar Calanilao chipped in 10 points, six rebounds, and six assists. For Alcantara, Yuro Fuentes posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, with Eiam Zyann and Humphrey Gador adding 12 and 11 points, respectively.
