The Sacramento Kings have waived six-time NBA All-Star guard DeMar DeRozan, unexpectedly adding him to the 2026 free agent class.
DeRozan's NBA Journey
DeRozan, a 17-year NBA veteran, spent the last two seasons with the Kings. Prior to joining Sacramento, he played for the Toronto Raptors, San Antonio Spurs, and Chicago Bulls.
The move comes as a surprise, as DeRozan was not initially expected to be available in the 2026 free agent market. According to team sources, the decision was part of the Kings' roster restructuring.
Impact on the Kings and Free Agency
DeRozan's departure leaves a significant void in Sacramento's backcourt. The Kings now have additional salary cap flexibility to pursue other players. Meanwhile, several contending teams are expected to show interest in the veteran scorer.
"DeMar has been a tremendous professional and leader during his time here," a Kings spokesperson said. "We thank him for his contributions and wish him the best."
DeRozan averaged 22.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game last season, demonstrating his enduring skill at age 36.
