Zamboanga Gives P350K to Muay Thai World Champ

The local government of Zamboanga City has proudly rewarded one of its own for achieving glory on the global sports stage. In a ceremony held at City Hall, the city disbursed a substantial financial incentive to a Muay Thai athlete who brought home medals from a premier world competition.

City Hall Ceremony Honors a Local Hero

Mayor Khymer Olaso personally presented the check to the accomplished athlete, Rudzma Abubakar, on Friday, December 26. The simple yet meaningful event recognized Abubakar's dedication and success, which have cast a positive light on her hometown. Mayor Olaso congratulated the athlete and expressed profound gratitude for the pride and honor she has bestowed upon Zamboanga City through her world-class performance.

Details of the Achievement and Reward

According to City Sports Director Dr. Cecil Atilano, the 25-year-old resident of Pasonanca, Zamboanga City, delivered an outstanding performance at the International Federation of Muaythai Association (IFMA) Senior World Championships. The tournament was held in Antalya, Turkey, from May 22 to 31, 2025.

Abubakar's remarkable skill led her to secure two medals at the prestigious event:

  • A gold medal, for which she received P200,000.
  • A bronze medal, which earned her an additional P100,000.

This brought the total cash incentive handed over by the city government to a significant P350,000. The reward structure underscores the city's commitment to supporting and motivating its athletes who compete and excel internationally.

A Boost for Local Sports and Aspiring Athletes

This gesture by the Zamboanga City Government goes beyond a single financial transaction. It serves as a powerful statement of support for local sports development and the athletes who dedicate themselves to their craft. Public recognition and tangible rewards for international success inspire the next generation of sports enthusiasts from the city.

The story of Rudzma Abubakar is now a testament to what local talent can achieve with determination and the backing of their community. It highlights the potential for Filipino athletes, particularly from regions outside the national capital, to rise and conquer world championships.
