Eumir Marcial to Compete in New Weight Class at 2025 SEA Games
Marcial Joins Philippine Boxing Team for 2025 SEA Games

Olympic bronze medalist Eumir Marcial is set to lead the Philippine boxing team in the upcoming 33rd Southeast Asian Games this December in Thailand. The professional boxer will be competing alongside newcomer Weljon Mindoro as they aim to bring home medals for the country.

New Weight Class Challenge for Marcial

Eumir Marcial will be fighting in the men's 80kg category, marking his first time competing in this weight class at the SEA Games. In previous tournaments, the accomplished boxer had always participated in the 75kg division. This change represents a significant adjustment in his preparation and strategy for the biennial competition.

The Tokyo Olympic Games bronze medalist and four-time SEA Games gold medalist acknowledged the pressure he faces from boxing fans and the public. "Of course there's a little pressure because people, boxing fans, are expecting a gold medal," Marcial stated. "But in amateur boxing, we need different preparation. Amateur is fast-paced. It's only three rounds."

Recent Performance and Team Composition

Marcial comes into the SEA Games fresh from a majority decision victory against Venezuelan boxer Eddy Colmenares. This fight served as part of the main undercard during the Thrilla in Manila 50th anniversary event last month, providing him with valuable competitive experience ahead of the regional games.

Meanwhile, Weljon Mindoro will be making his debut in the prestigious Southeast Asian Games, competing in the 75kg class. His inclusion adds fresh talent to the Philippine boxing contingent as they prepare to face competitors from across the region.

Event Details and National Expectations

The 33rd Southeast Asian Games will take place from December 9 to 20, 2025, in Thailand. This major sporting event brings together athletes from eleven Southeast Asian nations competing across various sports disciplines.

As one of the country's most reliable medal prospects, Marcial carries the hopes of Philippine boxing fans who anticipate another gold medal addition to his already impressive collection. His transition to a new weight class adds an intriguing element to his campaign, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to representing the Philippines successfully on the international stage.

The Philippine boxing team continues its preparation with both experienced and new fighters ready to showcase their skills and determination in Thailand next month.
