Filipina tennis athlete Shaira Hope Rivera is skillfully balancing academic pursuits with her athletic career following a triumphant podium finish for the Philippines. The 26-year-old recently contributed to the women's tennis team securing a bronze medal at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand in December 2025.
Academic and Athletic Pursuits in the United States
After her successful campaign in Thailand, Rivera has returned to the University of West Alabama in the United States. Her mission is dual: to pursue a master's degree and to utilize her final year of collegiate playing eligibility. She recently completed her undergraduate studies in sports management.
"Balik school po ako sa West Alabama kasi meron pa akong one year na eligibility po, so pwede pa akong maglaro," Rivera explained in an interview with SunStar Davao on January 10, 2026. This strategic move ensures she remains competition-ready while advancing her education.
Staying Sharp for National Duty
Rivera emphasized that her return to campus life does not signal a break from high-level tennis. She plans an active offseason, with the national team's support. "Sa summer po, mag-tournament muna po ako," she stated. "Kasi sabi nung national team, bibigyan nila akong budget for tournament."
The athlete, a native of Monkayo, Davao de Oro, reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to the Philippine national team, making herself available whenever called upon. Her journey began at age 10 at Monkayo Central Elementary School, where her talent first shone.
A Decorated Career and Future Goals
Rivera's career is marked by significant achievements, including:
- Winning the Palarong Pambansa doubles title in 2012.
- Relocating to Davao City after Typhoon Pablo, training under coach Marivic Loquinario.
- Amassing six PCA Open doubles titles and a Philippine National Games singles gold.
- Capturing the 2019 Malaysia Open doubles crown.
- Making her SEA Games debut in 2019 and winning a team bronze with Alexandra Eala in Cambodia.
Now, as she embarks on her graduate studies, Shaira Hope Rivera continues to embody the dedicated student-athlete, aiming for excellence both on the court and in the classroom while proudly representing the Philippines.
