The City Government of Bacolod is making a significant move to establish itself as a premier sports destination by officially expressing its intent to host the first-ever Philippine Sports Expo (PSE) in April 2026.
Mayor Greg Gasataya, alongside key city officials and PSE representatives, presented the ambitious proposal at the Bacolod City Government Center, solidifying the city's commitment to becoming the sports capital of the region.
Economic and Tourism Boost for the City
According to PSE Event Director Rachelle Villarosa, Bacolod was chosen as a host city due to its unique blend of accessibility, infrastructure readiness, and a deeply ingrained sports culture. The event is projected to deliver a substantial boost to the local economy.
Villarosa emphasized that the expo will generate significant income across various sectors, including accommodation, food services, transport, and local micro-enterprises. The city anticipates an influx of more than 15,000 participants and visitors, providing a wide-reaching economic stimulus.
A Launchpad for the Next Generation of Athletes
The Philippine Sports Expo is designed as a comprehensive platform for the discovery and development of young athletic talent. It aims to serve as a launchpad for the next generation of Negrense and Bacolodnon athletes, building a stronger foundation for regional sports excellence.
The event is expected to draw close to 7,500 young athletes from across the Philippines, who will compete in more than 17 sports disciplines, including:
- Basketball and Volleyball
- Football and Taekwondo
- Swimming and Billiards
- E-sports and Wrestling
- Arnis and Boxing
One of the highlighted competitions will be skateboarding, which is scheduled to take place at the biggest covered skate park and multi-purpose center in Barangay Vista Alegre.
Long-Term Legacy and National Recognition
The benefits of hosting the PSE are expected to extend far beyond the event itself. Villarosa noted that over the next three years, the region will likely experience strengthened sports tourism, growth for local sports businesses, and better opportunities for local athletes.
This major sports gathering adds to Bacolod's growing portfolio of national events. The Philippine Sports Commission Chairman, John Patrick Gregorio, has also previously announced that Bacolod will be the host city for the 2026 Batang Pinoy National Youth Games, further cementing its status as a hub for athletic development.
