San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama experienced his first chance at an NBA championship earlier than expected, and the 7'4" French phenom admitted he was not prepared for it.
"Obviously, we weren't ready, I wasn't ready to win a ring, that's clear," Wembanyama said.
The five-time champion Spurs failed to reclaim the crown after being defeated by the New York Knicks, 94-90, in Game 5 of the 2025-26 NBA Finals on Sunday, June 14, 2026 (Philippine time), ending the highly anticipated best-of-seven series 4-1.
As had been the pattern throughout the series, the Spurs built a double-digit lead early in the game but were overtaken by the Knicks in the fourth quarter.
The 22-year-old Wembanyama explained that he and the entire Spurs roster still need more experience before they can be considered ready to win a championship.
"In terms of desire to do well, intensity, effort, we were at a good level, me, too. But experience ... it's about the mistakes," said Wembanyama, who committed crucial turnovers that contributed to their losses in the series.
For Wembanyama, the most important takeaway is the lesson learned from this painful defeat.
"Compared to anything before, this is the biggest lesson of my life, the biggest learning moment. I can't tell you exactly what the lesson is, but we're learning from that, for sure," he added.
Wembanyama made it clear that the failure has given him even more motivation to work harder until he reaches the pinnacle of success.
