Cebuano Athletes to Receive Prestigious ORLACSAN Award for Typhoon Tino Heroism

In a heartwarming tribute to community spirit and bravery, three Cebuano athletes will be honored for their selfless actions during the catastrophic impact of Typhoon Tino in Cebu. The athletes will receive the esteemed ORLACSAN Award at the upcoming 40th Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC)–San Miguel Beer (SMB) Cebu Sports Awards, scheduled for March 8, 2026, at Ayala Center Cebu.

Honorees and Their Heroic Deeds

The recipients of the ORLACSAN Award are basketball player JR Quiñahan, collegiate athlete Elmar Tuburan, and taekwondo competitor Christian Jay Abarquez. Each demonstrated extraordinary courage and dedication in the face of Typhoon Tino's destructive forces.

JR Quiñahan, a native of Mandaue, faced personal tragedy as his home and belongings were flooded. Despite this, he prioritized assisting others, rescuing a three-month-old baby, an elderly couple, and a senior citizen from perilous conditions.

Elmar Tuburan, hailing from Talisay, braved the severe flooding in Barangay Lawaan II to aid in rescue operations, helping victims and their families reach safety without hesitation.

Christian Jay Abarquez showcased ingenuity and compassion in Barangay Lagtang by constructing a makeshift bridge, which enabled the safe evacuation of seven residents amidst rapidly rising floodwaters.

Legacy of the ORLACSAN Award

First introduced in 1996, the ORLACSAN Award is named in honor of Orlando C. Sanchez, a legendary sportswriter and editor from Cebu. This prestigious accolade celebrates individuals who exhibit exceptional dedication and service to their communities, transcending their athletic achievements to make a positive impact during times of crisis.

The upcoming awards ceremony not only recognizes sporting excellence but also highlights the profound role athletes can play in societal resilience and humanitarian efforts. The stories of Quiñahan, Tuburan, and Abarquez serve as inspiring reminders of the power of compassion and action in the face of adversity.
