NBA Playoffs: A Lakers Fan's Perspective on the Western Conference
As a longtime Lakers fan, it pains me to admit that Los Angeles is in deep trouble. After losing Game 3, and without Luka Doncic, their chances of advancing are slim to none. The Oklahoma City Thunder will march into the Western Conference Finals, but who will they face?
The answer appears to be the San Antonio Spurs. After dropping Game 1 at home to the Anthony Edwards-led Minnesota Timberwolves, the Spurs have rebounded to win the last two games. They should dispose of the Timberwolves and win the series, setting up a tantalizing matchup: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA) versus Victor Wembanyama.
The MVP vs. The Alien
The 6-foot-6, 195-pound SGA goes head-to-head with the 7-foot-4, 235-pound Wembanyama. The MVP candidate against the alien-like rookie. Interestingly, the NBA MVP award announcement will coincide with the series. Who will win? I am hoping it is the Frenchman, but expert analysis suggests the Canadian will earn his second MVP in two years. This could provide extra motivation for both players.
I watched Wembanyama's interview after their Game 3 win. He is highly competitive. When asked about high-pressure playoff situations, he answered, "I'm built for this!" He relishes these moments. If he finishes second in MVP voting, he will be extra motivated.
Can the Spurs Beat the Thunder?
Yes! While OKC has a winning record against the other 28 NBA teams, they have a lopsided losing record against San Antonio. The teams played five times in the regular season, and the Spurs won four. The main reason is Victor Wembanyama. His team was +47 in the 70 minutes he played against the Thunder. If he continues his dominating, shot-blocking performance, the Spurs can upset the defending champions, march to the Finals, and win the title—something they last did in 2014 when Kawhi Leonard was Finals MVP.
Exciting games lie ahead.
