Pickleball Paddle Guide: How Cebu Players Choose the Right Gear
Pickleball Paddle Guide for Cebu Players

In the vibrant pickleball community of Cebu, a humorous saying has taken root: once you dive into the sport, you either hunt for the ideal paddle or scout warehouses to convert into courts. Lately, the focus has shifted decisively toward gear selection. What began as a casual hobby has evolved into a dedicated pursuit, with players increasingly investing time in researching and comparing equipment. The appeal is multifaceted—pickleball is enjoyable, easy to pick up, and encourages physical activity, often leading enthusiasts down a rabbit hole of online reviews and specifications in search of that perfect paddle.

Finding the Right Feel

Dale Abellanosa, a decorated competitor and active coach from Toledo City, Cebu, has witnessed this growth firsthand. With tournament experience across Cebu, including events in Moalboal and Cebu City, his journey parallels the sport's steady rise. For Abellanosa, selecting a paddle starts with grasping how it feels during play.

"When choosing a good paddle, you have to consider the weight, the core material, and the face," he explained to SunStar Lifestyle. "Lighter paddles offer better maneuverability, while heavier ones provide more power."

He emphasized that core material significantly impacts performance. Polymer cores, the most popular option, are softer and quieter, enhancing control. Nomex cores are harder and louder, designed for power and speed. Aluminum cores strike a balance, being lightweight with a softer touch.

"Players may prefer Nomex for aggressive play, polymer for control, and aluminum for finesse and touch shots," Abellanosa noted. Most players, he added, lean toward polymer cores for their durability and balanced feel.

The paddle's surface also matters—graphite or carbon fiber offers more control, while fiberglass adds power. Industry insights from a 2025 Forbes article support this, stating fiberglass paddles suit powerful swings and are often more affordable, whereas carbon fiber paddles provide precision for intermediate to advanced players.

Details That Matter

Even minor features can influence a player's game. "Grip size and paddle thickness affect comfort," Abellanosa said. An ergonomic, sweat-resistant grip is crucial, especially in Cebu's humid climate, reducing strain and improving consistency.

Forbes highlights that grip circumference typically ranges from four to 4.5 inches, allowing a relaxed hold. Paddle weight varies by player preference and skill level.

"For weight, around eight ounces or more gives better control," Abellanosa advised. Forbes adds that heavier paddles (over eight ounces) offer power and stability, while lighter ones enhance maneuverability.

Shape is another often-overlooked factor. Abellanosa identifies three head sizes: standard, elongated, and hybrid.

"For head size, I usually recommend standard or hybrid paddles. They give a bigger sweet spot," he said. "Elongated paddles have more reach and power, but they're better suited for more advanced players, especially in singles."

Other Things to Check

Texture plays a vital role in performance. A rougher surface aids in generating spin, improving control for shots like dinks, drops, and serves. This is why online shoppers frequently inquire about surface roughness. However, regulations limit texture to prevent excessive spin, with USA Pickleball setting official standards.

"As a coach, I always recommend players use a paddle approved by USA Pickleball, especially if they plan to compete," Abellanosa stressed. "It ensures the paddle meets official standards for fairness, consistency, and tournament eligibility."

Comfort and affordability are also key. While high-end paddles feature advanced materials, mid-range options often suffice for most players. In Cebu's community, the adage "if you can't perform, at least look good" resonates, as Abellanosa mentioned.

"A nice paddle can boost confidence and make you feel more game-ready, especially in a social setting," he said. "But performance still comes down to skill, consistency, and practice. A high-quality paddle helps, but it won't replace good fundamentals."
