Davao Region Sends 772 to Palarong Pambansa 2026, Targets Top 3
Davao Region Targets Top 3 at Palarong Pambansa 2026

The Davao Region is setting its sights on a top-three finish at the Palarong Pambansa 2026, fielding a 772-member delegation that includes athletes, coaches, officials, and chaperones. The contingent is led by 321 representatives from Davao City, forming the core of the regional team.

Momentum from 2025 Performance

Davao Region enters the national games riding on a strong fourth-place finish in Ilocos Norte last year, where it secured 43 gold, 28 silver, and 36 bronze medals. This marked a significant improvement from its 2024 haul of 32 gold, 25 silver, and 35 bronze medals. Allan G. Farnazo, during the opening of the Davraa Meet 2026 in Tagum City in February, urged athletes to surpass previous results. He highlighted that Davao City's gold medal count increased by 13.62 percent in 2025 compared to 2024, contributing 16 of the region's 43 gold medals. "This forecast is not only based on potential but on challenging the strength of Davao Region and raising the bar of performance higher," Farnazo stated.

Intensive Training Underway

Athletes and coaches have intensified preparations through a month-long in-house training program at Mintal Elementary School and Mintal Comprehensive National High School, which began on April 17. The training includes high-intensity drills, technique refinement, and simulation of competition pressure to ensure peak performance by the May 24 opening. The elementary boys football team, for instance, has been running ball-control drills to sharpen their skills ahead of the Palarong Pambansa 2026.

City Government Support

The Davao City government has extended PHP 6 million in assistance to cover logistics, equipment, and athlete welfare, according to Department of Education Division Schools Superintendent Rey Solitario. This support is crucial for the delegation's campaign, ensuring that athletes have the necessary resources to compete at their best.

Host Province Preparations

Host province Agusan del Sur is racing to complete final preparations for its first time staging the national meet. Officials reported that the province has reached 97.25 percent readiness, with only finishing touches left on seven remaining venues and billeting facilities. Delegations are expected to arrive as early as May 13. Despite weather-related construction delays and rising costs of fuel and basic commodities, organizers have adopted austerity measures to keep the timeline intact. They have also addressed logistical concerns, including high airfare costs for delegations, with the Department of Education exploring transport assistance. Local officials expressed confidence that all playing venues and athlete accommodations will meet requirements before the opening ceremony at the Patin-Ay Sports Complex.
