PNP and NBI Launch Joint Probe into Fake Marcos Medical Bulletin
The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) have initiated a formal investigation into the circulation of a fake medical bulletin concerning President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on social media platforms. This coordinated response aims to identify and hold accountable those responsible for spreading misleading information about the Chief Executive's health.
PNP Chief Condemns Disrespectful and Illegal Act
In an official statement, PNP Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. revealed that he has already directed the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) to mobilize a specialized team. This unit will investigate the incident and coordinate with other law enforcement agencies to ensure those behind the fabrication face legal consequences.
"I have already tasked the PNP-ACG to help in the conduct of an investigation aimed at identifying those responsible for this. This is really disrespectful, insensitive and gross violation of the law," Nartatez emphasized.
Balancing Freedom of Expression with Legal Boundaries
The top police official clarified that while the PNP respects the political landscape and upholds every Filipino's freedom of expression, the creation and distribution of counterfeit documents targeting any individual is considered malicious and unlawful.
"This must be looked into because it is clearly aimed at misleading the public. While we in the PNP fully respect the freedom of expression of every Filipino and every netizen, we are certain that this kind of action is not part of that freedom," he added. Nartatez further urged netizens to exercise responsibility in their social media usage.
NBI Mandated to Investigate Without Direct Orders
During a press conference, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro confirmed that the NBI is also mandated to probe the dissemination of what she described as "fabricated and malicious" claims regarding the President's health.
"It doesn't need to be reported. The NBI acts quickly. They already know what's happening in our government and in our surroundings. So, without even an order coming from the President, the NBI is mandated to investigate this matter," Castro stated.
She stressed the seriousness of the issue, noting, "This should really be looked into because the President's condition and health are no joking matter. We know that the NBI acts quickly to investigate who is behind this."
Official Denials and Public Warnings
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) had earlier condemned the circulation of the fabricated medical documents and issued a warning to the public about their deceptive intent. The office assured citizens that President Marcos is in good health, fully capable of performing his official duties, and remains actively engaged in his responsibilities.
Additionally, the hospital where the document was falsely claimed to have originated has officially denied its authenticity, further discrediting the misinformation.
