GCash Launches Gold Investments on GCrypto to Help Filipinos Hedge Against Inflation
GCash Launches Gold Investments on GCrypto

GCash, the leading finance super app in the Philippines, has introduced a new feature that allows users to invest in gold-backed digital assets through its GCrypto platform. This move aims to help Filipinos protect and grow their money amid rising inflation and market volatility.

Gold-Backed Digital Assets

The new offering, Gold powered by Tether, enables users to purchase Tether Gold ($XAUT), a digital asset that represents ownership of physical gold. Each token is backed 1:1 by one fine troy ounce of gold stored in secure Swiss vaults, combining the stability of gold with the convenience of blockchain technology.

Addressing Inflation Concerns

The launch comes at a time when the Philippines is experiencing high inflation. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the country's overall inflation rate rose to 7.2 percent in April 2026, up from 4.1 percent in March, driven by increases in food, utilities, and fuel prices. This inflationary pressure erodes the purchasing power of cash savings, prompting investors to seek assets that retain value.

Gold has historically served as a hedge against inflation. For example, while the Philippine peso depreciated by 20–25 percent against the US dollar from 2016 to 2026, gold prices surged by approximately 290 percent, from USD 1,150 per ounce to USD 4,500 per ounce, according to Goldprice.org.

Accessible Investment

GCash aims to lower barriers to gold investing. Users can start with as little as PHP 200, significantly less than the cost of physical gold bullion. The digital gold meets the London Bullion Market Association's standards for "Good Delivery" bars, ensuring at least 99.5 percent purity. This provides confidence that investments are backed by investment-grade bullion.

Unlike traditional gold ownership, digital access eliminates logistical challenges such as storage, insurance, and transport. Users can buy, sell, and monitor their holdings 24/7 through the GCash app.

How to Access

To invest in Gold on GCrypto, users can open the GCash app, go to the "Invest" tab, tap "GCrypto," and select "GOLD" in the Home or Market section.

Winsley Bangit, Group Head of New Businesses at Mynt, GCash's parent company, stated: "Today, Filipinos are looking for ways to protect the value of their hard-earned money amid rising inflation and everyday financial pressures. By offering Gold in GCrypto, GCash is making gold investing, traditionally seen as an exclusive store of value, more accessible on GCash. We're removing barriers and enabling more Filipinos to take part in building long-term financial resilience, right within a platform they already trust and use every day."

This initiative aligns with GCash's mission to make financial services more inclusive and responsive to the needs of Filipinos.
