DepEd Reiterates Ban on Gadget Use During Class Hours

The Department of Education (DepEd) reiterated on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, that the use of electronic gadgets during class hours is strictly prohibited in all public schools across the Philippines. This policy aligns with DepEd Order (DO) No. 6, series of 2026, also known as the Guidelines on Ensuring a Safe and Motivating Learning Environment (ESMLE).

Scope of the Prohibition

According to a memorandum from the Office of the Secretary, the guidelines explicitly ban the use of portable electronic devices during instructional hours by both learners and school personnel. The prohibition covers activities such as accessing social media, playing online games, creating content, and vlogging while classes are in session.

The DepEd emphasized that the policy aims to promote safe and responsible use of the internet and related devices, ensuring that the learning environment remains focused and conducive to education.

Exceptions for Educational and Emergency Purposes

Despite the strict ban, the DepEd allows gadget usage under specific circumstances. For academic purposes, students and teachers may use devices to access educational platforms, digital resources, or participate in authorized online collaborative activities. Additionally, gadgets can be used during emergency situations, such as facilitating communication during disasters, medical crises, or other immediate safety concerns.

The agency has directed all field offices and public schools to intensify information drives on responsible internet and device use nationwide, ensuring that the policy is clearly communicated and understood by all stakeholders.
