She issued a stern warning that exploitative businesses could face severe penalties, including the potential revocation of their business permits, as part of efforts to stabilize market prices during the ongoing Middle East crisis.
Government Response to Price Concerns
Governor Baricuatro convened the Provincial Price Monitoring Council (PPMC) to address growing concerns over rising costs of basic and essential commodities. This initiative aims to ensure price stability and prevent profiteering, with the government taking proactive steps to protect public welfare amidst economic uncertainties.
Monitoring Efforts by Agriculture Department
Aurea "Jake" Madrio, Chief of the Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division at the Department of Agriculture 7, reported that continuous monitoring is being conducted on key items such as rice, corn, meat, vegetables, fruits, and root crops. Madrio clarified that recent social media reports about rice price increases specifically refer to the premium local brand Ganador, not the general market.
Based on regional price monitoring data, rice prices have remained stable, ranging from P54 to P60 per kilogram since March 6. This transparency aims to counter misinformation and reassure the public about food affordability.
Warning to Retailers and Upcoming Meeting
Governor Baricuatro reiterated her warning to retailers, emphasizing that those who take advantage of the situation will face appropriate legal sanctions. Additionally, a meeting is scheduled for tomorrow with mayors across the Province of Cebu to coordinate further actions and reinforce compliance with price control measures.
